Mladá dívka Eruru jednoho dne v lese nedaleko své vesnice najde těžce raněného umírajícího muže. Naštěstí pro něj je Eruru vnučka místní léčitelky Tsukuru, která o něj začne pečovat, dokud se za pár dní neprobere. Když se ale neznámý probudí, nepamatuje si vůbec nic ze své minulosti - ani vlastní jméno. Navíc má na obličeji podivnou masku, která nejde sejmout. Zvláštní je i to, že nemá špičaté uši a ocas, jak je pro obyvatele Eruřina království běžné.
